At Spybey's, we are proud to offer specialist myopia management for children. Myopia (short-sightedness) is on the rise, but early intervention can make a big difference. With advanced treatments and expert guidance, we can help slow the progression and protect your child’s vision for the future.
In Myopia (short sightedness), the eye is longer than normal or the cornea is too steep, so that light rays focus in front of the retina. Near objects are clear, but distant objects appear blurred. For the most part, this is an inconvenience considering how frustrating it can be to be dependent on contact lenses or glasses.
The eyes are expected to grow in childhood at a regular rate until age 10 to 12. However, if they grow too quickly or don’t stop at age 10 to 12, then a child becomes myopic. Myopia control aims to slow excessive eye growth, ideally to the normal rate expected in childhood.
With myopia management, children and teenagers will undergo less frequent changes in their prescription. With vision being more stable and deteriorating less between eye examinations, children and teenagers will have better vision for school, sport, and other daily activities.
Research has shown that myopia can lead to higher lifelong risks of eye diseases like cataracts, retinal detachment, and macular degeneration. Even low levels of myopia can increase the risk of eye diseases compared to someone who doesn't have myopia.
Using special contact lenses or glasses may reduce the progression of the level of myopia by around 0.50D - 0.75D (D = dioptre; unit of lens power) on average compared with using standard glasses and contact lenses.
If myopia management is successful, this may mean your child grows up with a lower level of myopia than they would have had without treatment. This means they may not depend on their glasses as much as they otherwise would have had to; their prescription will be lower, and their glasses will be thinner and lighter.
We are passionate about eye health and dedicated to providing a personalised experience that puts your vision needs first.
We recommend having an eye test every two years. However, if you’re experiencing any changes in your vision or have been advised by your optometrist, you may need to come in more frequently.
Please bring any current glasses or contact lenses, a list of medications you’re taking, and your NHS or insurance details if applicable. If it’s your first visit, any previous prescriptions or medical history can be helpful.
